Inability to Conserve:
Conservation refers to the idea that certain physical characteristics of objects remain the same even if their outward appearance changes. In the experiment of conservation which Piaget conducted with his subject, the subject was shown two identical tall glasses of water and asked if they contain equal amount. Once the children agree that both the tall glasses contained equal amount of water, water from one of the tall glasses is poured into a wide bowl in front of the child. After pouring the water into the bowl, the child is asked again if both the containers contain equal amount of water. This time the subjects responded that the tall glass contains more water. This explains that ‘there is less amount of water in the bowl because the height of the bowl is less than the tall glass’. In such scenarios of inability to conserve physical qualities of objects, one dimension of the object for example – height in the experiment of conservation of liquid gets dominant over the other dimensions.
